You’re eating too little: eating too much food can cause you to gain weight, eating too little can also make it surprisingly difficult to shed those pounds. Your body has a natural instinct to protect itself so when it is not given an adequate amount of food it will automatically go into starvation mode, causing the metabolism to slow down and the body to hoard fat and calories. As a result of this it will become much more difficult for you to lose weight.

You may be eating more than you think Keep a food diary for a week and write down everything you eat. You could be surprised! This will help you to cut out the extra calories you didn’t realize you were consuming.

You could be making bad food choices Read the labels carefully when you go shopping. Don’t be fooled by the ‘low fat’ labels on products such as cheese. Cheese is always high fat. The same is true for most other products. Be aware of the calorie content of what you are eating.

You’re not sleeping enough. Sleep = repair. When your body gets enough rest, it’s able to perform.

You’re not active enough Make exercise a daily part of your life to increase your metabolism. It could be something as simple as taking the stairs instead of the lift every day or spending a few minutes walking from the parking lot to your office. You will soon notice the difference.

You’re not drinking enough water Drinking water increases oxygen flow to your blood and gives your body the energy it needs to continuously burn calories and fat throughout the day. By drinking little to no water, you are failing to give your body what it needs to work off your excess baggage.

Skipping meals. Skipping meals causes your blood sugar levels to spike and crash, affecting your energy and mood. Because you become so hungry, it leads to overeating. Our body also responds by slowing metabolism, retaining weight, and switching into famine mode.

You’ve hit a weight loss plateau. This usually happens after you have lost a few pounds and then suddenly you can’t lose any. To overcome your plateau, shake up your weight loss routine by doing new exercise and by following a new eating plan.

Weight loss has to be the easiest fitness goal to achieve. It’s all about reducing food intake, exercising hard, and never giving up.

Losing weight the 'cool way' | Patrick Rensen | TEDxDelft

“I want you to understand that it is good to feel chilly,” Patrick Rensen says. Though there are different ways to burn calories, Rensen argues there is a fairly straightforward way to achieve this: lower the room temperature.

“Activating brown fat to burn 200 kcal per day,” says Rensen, “can translate to about three kilograms of weight loss per year. We are now investigating whether nutritional and pharmacological interventions may be effective as well.”

As a Professor of Endocrinology at Leiden University Medical Center, Rensen studies the role of sugar and fat metabolism in diabetes and heart disease. In particular, Rensen is investigating something called ‘brown fat’ which is different from the all too familiar ‘white fat’ that tends to collect around our middles. “We know that babies are born with brown fat,” says Rensen, “but we thought it disappeared after a few years…”

What Losing Weight Does To Your Body And Brain | The Human Body

Special thanks to John Gunstad, professor with the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kent State University, for speaking with us about his cutting-edge research on how losing weight affects brain function.

Following is the transcript of the video:

Here’s what losing weight does to your body and brain.

During the first week, you may find it easy to lose weight by simply switching to a healthier diet. But as your metabolism adjusts, you won’t burn as many calories as you used to.

So losing additional weight will become harder.

Making matters worse, as the fat melts away, you’ll start to experience an increase in appetite. After a meal, fat cells release a hormone called leptin into the bloodstream.

This surge in leptin levels signals to your brain you’re full and should stop eating. But with less overall fat, people who lose weight show a measurable dip in leptin.

Brain scans of obese patients who had lost 10% of their body weight revealed that less leptin leads to increased activity in regions of the brain that control our desire to eat.

The result isn’t just an increased appetite but an even stronger urge to eat fatty, high-calorie foods, because your brain is trying to restore the body’s leptin levels to normal.

However, fighting that early impulse to gorge on pizza and donuts is worth it in the long run.

Besides the decreased risk of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, scientists studying overweight people discovered that losing just one pound of body weight reduces four pounds of pressure on knee joints.

Losing excess weight also reduces strain on the blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain, and boosts overall brain function.

Several studies have shown that people who underwent weight-loss surgery saw an improvement in memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills in as soon as three months.

Plus, brain scans indicate that people who lost weight and kept it off for nine months reacted differently when shown images of high-calorie foods than before they lost the weight.

The brain regions that process reward, motivation, and taste didn’t react as strongly, whereas the areas that promote overall self-control had a boost in activity.

So fighting those cravings early on might make them easier to control later. Turns out — like anything else — losing weight can get easier with practice.
